Buddhism Day by Day

The Indian Philosopher Swami Vivekananda declared: “It is religion, maker of men, that we need. It is education , maker of men that we need.” Fostering people, building character — this is absolutely fundamental for creating a bright future. Toward this end, both the profound spirituality of religion and the intellectual illumination of education are essential.

ALL RIGHT, LET’S GET TO WORK AGAIN!” — This is the spirit of people of genuine substance. Those who avoid hard work or neglect the things they have to do, who just while away their time, eating, sleeping, playing, watching television — such individuals will never experience true happiness, satisfaction or joy.

You, yourself, are a Thus Come One who is originally enlightened and endowed with the three bodies. You should chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo with this conviction. Then the place where you chant daimoku will become the dwelling place of the treasure tower.

Even those who worry about not having the ability to give guidance can master it naturally as they continue to chant Daimoku. Although your own ability may be limited, if you have a strong Ichinen for your members to become capable people and even surpass you, that alone will definitely enable you to get good results. This is in keeping with a quotation from the Sutra, “We have obtained a priceless gem without seeking it.”

Although you are told, “Develop the ability to give guidance, ” you cannot do it in a day. Faith would be necessary if you could change yourself through words alone. People have studied book on moral discipline since the beginning of history. If it were all that simple, everyone would have long since developed a perfect character and we’d have a happier world than we do today.

Man’s destiny ordinarily limits the extent to which he can improve himself. Only with the supreme Law as the basis can he transform his destiny and achieve his human revolution. One may, even temporarily hold them in check. However, this is not a fundamental change. When you chant Daimoku, you can attain your human revolution naturally.

It is ideal for youth to have power, good judgement and broad minds, but they need to not have all three, Youth are still in the making and a promising future lies ahead. Plunge ahead with courage and passion and don’t worry about your shortcomings.

If people respect and trust you just by looking at you, this is guidance without words. The ability to give guidance comes from your prayers that your members will have stronger faith and become happier, and that you yourself will fulfill your responsibilities. Talent and strategy are not the essence of the real ability to give guidance. (pgs.36-38)
